The National Day of Reforestation "A New Forest" is an initiative that takes place year after year. It is part of the work of the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), and is executed in partnership with TV Azteca television, as well as different local actors, in each of the States of the Republic.
In the "A New Forest 2018" day, in which the AMBIO Cooperative participated, all the states in Mexico, also participated simultaneously. We worked on 448 hectares of deforested areas and planted 425 thousand trees of native species, to facilitate their survival. This reforestation had the peculiarity, with respect to the previous ones, of carrying out the plantations within the cities, in public spaces such as ridges, parks and sports units, which were reforested, and marking the beginning of "A New Metropolitan Forest".
In Chiapas, this reforestation took place in the suburban area known as "Loma Larga", which is located within the polygon of the Sumidero Canyon National Park (PNSC). This site was chosen, due to conservation efforts that are building the Park (PNSC) in conjunction with, PRONATURA Mexico and AMBIO. This is a buffer area of the Sumidero Canyon and it has direct adjacency with suburban colonies of the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
The mechanics of this day consisted of various environmental groups, young people and the general public attending to the site on the third Sunday of August, to plant native forest trees in the area, such as the springs (Tabebuia donnell-smithii), matilisguates (Tabebuia rosea) and cedars (Cedrus).
More than three hundred people gathered to this reforestation in Chiapas, in which, it was possible to reforest 5 hectares, with an approximate of almost 5 thousand plants. The Cooperative collaborated in the previous days with the delimitation of the quadrants and with the thinning of the area, all thanks to the support of its community fire brigades of AMBIO.
