In month of June, the Sustainable & Social Tourism Summit, a sustainable tourism event of national and international impact, was held (this is the Third Edition) in the city of Cancún, Quintana Roo. The Scolel'te Program was present, to mitigate the carbon footprint of this event.
This event highlights the major issues of the tourism sector, in the search of sustainable solutions to challenges such as, over-density of destinations, mobility, conservation of ecosystems, climate change, emission compensation schemes, decent employment, among others.
The eco-tourist and community company, Community Tours Sian Kaan, has worked hand in hand with Sustentur (in the measurement of the carbon footprint) and the Scolel'te Program (with the purchase of carbon offsets), to mitigate the carbon footprint generated by its eco-tourism activities.
For 2019, Community Tours Sian Ka´an made the decision to become a carbon neutral company, so during the first four months of the year, this Community Company has mitigated 506 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) with the Scolel'te Program.
During the Summit, the certificate corresponding to these compensated tons was delivered and the joint work developed by the AMBIO Cooperative (operator of the Scolel'te Program), Sustentur and Community Tours Sian Kaan, was presented to show how to the carbon neutrality was achived by this eco tourist center, located in one of the most important Nature Reserves in Mexico.
