On July 11th is celebrated the "National Day of Forest Fire Fighters" at the national level, a celebration that, for the state of Chiapas, took place in the Forestry Development Promotion Office. This day seeks to recognize forest fire fighters, encourage their efforts, as well as to celebrate the technicians who work as a team to reduce the damage caused to natural resources by fire.
To be able to participate as a forest fire fighter brigade member, a high degree of preparation and discipline is required, which allows them to carry out their activities correctly. AMBIO has promoted a strategy for Fire Management in different regions of the State of Chiapas, which includes work with community brigades. One of our community fire fighting brigade members, Jesús Gutiérrez Espinosa, was awarded during this ceremony for his forest fire prevention work carried out in the Ejido San Joaquín, in Ocozocoautla, Chiapas.
The brigade members are exposed to high temperatures, snake bites, poachers and accidents, recurring risks in their role as forest fire fighters. Their contribution to the protection of ecosystems is of great relevance, since, by controlling forest fires, they help prevent soil erosion, desertification, the loss of plant communities, as well to mitigate the effects of Climate Change.
