Within the framework of the search for alternatives strategies for the mitigation of Climate Change, the management of forests and agroforestry systems play a preponderant role. The AMBIO Cooperative and the Mexican Certifier of Productos y Procesos Ecológicos S.C. (CERTIMEX, organization for the certification of organic fair trade coffee in Mexico) promoted an "Introductory Workshop on Carbon Markets and their Relationship with Organic Coffee Production."
The objective of the workshop was to learn about the actions of each organization, as well as identify the processes and mechanisms that allow to develop a certified organic-fair coffee strategy, with the added value of complying with the criteria for the participation in the Voluntary Carbon Markets, through a possible integration to the Scolel´te Program.
The coffee agroforestry system is one of the systems implemented by the Program, which has a wide presence in southern Mexico and represents a productive alternative for ejidos and communities. It has a wide national and international market demand, and is better valued, if it is developed under the organic coffee approach.
The workshop allowed to identify the strengths of both organizations, taking into account the management of quality standards that are being met, for the certification of the work carried out in the field and the delivery of products at the end of the cycle, as well as the job opportunities. Twenty five people (coffee technicians, representatives of coffee organizations, certifiers, among others) participated in a two-day virtual workshop.
