Agroforestry systems, as part of maintenance tasks, require regular pruning during the early years of tree growth. Pruning is a silvicultural activity that consists in removing the branches of the main stem of a tree, so it contributes to maintain the health of the tree and its growth.
Community technicians and smallholders of the ejidos Caracol, Tirol, Emiliano Zapata and San Martín of the Municipality of Berriozábal (located in the Selva Zoque- Sumidero Canyon Complex) participated in the Pruning Week. This activity consisted of health pruning and training workshops, having as participants communities that entered to the Scolel'te Program, two years ago and that have plots established with agroforestry systems of: coffee timber, improved fallow, taungya and live fences.
Pruning has a special relevance in the activities of maintenance and control of pests in the Scolel'te Program, since it favor for a faster growth of trees. Depending on the condition of the plot, it is possible to clean the trees through pruning (such as pest control) from year 2 and up to year 5 of the plant, to improve the quality of the trunk.
During the Pruning Week, 30 participants participated in Scolel'te, who recognized the importance of pruning and general maintenance in agroforestry systems, as well as improvements in the final results.
