Agroforestry plots monitoring.
The project “Local governance and Protection of the upper basin of the Pijijiapan river” developed by the AMBIO cooperative, with the support of the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature AC, proposes among its various objectives, the restoration of degraded areas (overexploited agricultural & livestock lands ) towards agroforestry systems (timber trees associated with some product system, e.g. coffee or cocoa), with the aim of helping to restore and care for the watershed.
The project contemplates the installation and monitoring of said systems throughout its execution time, so, in this way, recently, the second monitoring of plots was carried out, which consists of visiting all the plots and accounting for all the plants, to know their survival percentage, their adaptation, health and determine the amount of plant necessary for replanting in the next rainy season, in this case, 2024. Likewise, continue with the process of establishing the agroforestry system until reaching 100%, which can take 4 to 5 years.
With these and other associated actions, the aim is to improve the health of the basin, which directly affects the health of the human populations and the biodiversity that coexist there, while supporting the diversification of sustainable economic activities of the families that live in and from the countryside.
